In the footsteps of Jesus

Israel … the Holy Land … the Sea of Galilee … Jesus of Nazareth. For Christians, Israel is truly at the heart of their religion. After all, Israel was where the Son of God was born, lived, died, and was resurrected. The New Testament tells Christians so much about this lovely, enchanted land. We who read these stories feel the Israel of old come alive, and this same feeling permeates our entire being when we set foot in Israel and walk where Jesus walked. So much of Israel resonates within the Christian soul, and to have the opportunity to visit Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, and Jerusalem deepens the faith of Christians of all denominations. Israel truly is the land where we all come together as one faith.

There is so much to see of Jesus's life:

• There is Bethlehem, birthplace of Jesus, where you will visit the Chapel of the Nativity of Christ.
• There is Nazareth, Jesus's childhood home, where you will visit the Basilica of the Annunciation and Mary's Well.
• There is the Sea of Galilee, where you will visit Capernaum, the center of Jesus's preaching; St. Peter's House; Tabgha, site of the Miracle of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fish; the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount, and the serene site on the Jordan, where you can be baptized in the same river in which Jesus himself was baptized.
• There is Jerusalem. Even though the city where Jesus walked is, in most places, buried well beneath the street level of today's "Old City," we can still easily imagine the scene as it might have looked during Jesus's lifetime: the same cobblestone streets, the same limestone block construction with the same types of thorny shrubs growing out of the walls, the same surrounding hills. And thanks to new archaeological digs, in some places you can actually touch the stones where Jesus stood and taught, stones that lay buried until recently, for some 1,900 years. Here in Jerusalem you will ascend from the Old City to the Mount of Olives and walk through the Garden of Gethsemane. Here you will visit the Praetorium, site of the public trial of Jesus and his condemnation. Here you will walk along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the traditional site of the Crucifixion, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus. Here you will visit the Garden Tomb, representing the true site of Jesus's burial to many Protestants.

Biblical Israel

As well as those areas where Jesus lived, there are many other significant Biblical sites to visit:

• Jaffa — Where Peter stayed with Simon the Tanner, and the Church of St. Peter, where he raised Tabatha from the dead.
• Caesarea — The political capital of ancient Judea, the site of Peter's imprisonment, and the home of Pontius Pilate.
• Masada — King Herod's amazing desert fortress, and site of the epic story in which 960 Jews chose to end their lives in mass suicide rather than submit to the Roman legions.
• Western (Wailing) Wall — Judaism's most sacred place of worship.
• City of David — See the excavations now being conducted uncovering the site of the palace of King David.
